Womeb though there is a timeless quality to the novel and no dates are mentioned we are being asked to pass judgement on the new State that has emerged and was beginning to find its feet under the influence of the Constitution.

One other thing that was odd about this book was the lack of time line. McGahern seems to imply that the idea of family identity is so strong that regardless of the psychic or physical pain, nothing can surpass the pain of not being connected to the family as a unit. We are experiencing technical difficulties. However, even at his most physically incapacitated, Moran has still not lost his hold over his daughters: I shouldn’t have waited that long, this is a great book. Moran is an old Republican whose life was forever transformed by his days of glory as a guerrilla leader in the War of Independence.
Despite this, the overriding feeling is one of a tight knit group, with particularly the females in the family being devoted to their patriarch to mcgahetn very end. The relationship between him and his wife and children is the principal focus of this plotless novel.
